The newly formed British Railways Western Region commissioned Gyrth Russell in 1949 to create this painting. However, it was not until 1955 the Western Region used any of the paintings they had commissioned. Even then Polperro did not materialise. That has only come about through the Travelling Art Gallery tracking down the original artwork. Polperro's nearest railway access has since 1860 been Looe.
