Jack Merriott (RI, ROI, PS, SMA 1901-1968)

Landscape & portrait painter in oil & watercolour, poster designer, author. Born 15/11/1901. Educated Greenwich Central School. Studied at Croydon School of Art and at St Martins School of Art. Lectured in Royal Army Education Corps (1945-6). President of Wapping Group of artists 1947-60. Lived at Shirley in Surrey, Storrington, Sussex and later at Polperro, Cornwall. Illustrated some of the 'Beautiful Britain' series of books by Blackies. Lectured widely on watercolour and produced the 'Pitman Guide to Watercolour' and wrote 'Discovering Watercolour'. Was vice president of RI and achieved a prolific output of artwork for the railways. Produced posters for BR and the Post Office.

Produced artwork for LNER, LMR (A), S Region (A), Scottish Region, W Region series.
