John L Baker ( 1922-)

Landscape, portrait & equestrian artist in watercolour, illustrator, lecturer and author. Born Birmingham and trained in art at Birmingham, W.Bromwich and later at the Slade School. Began career as teacher but turned to illustrating and writing, especially for the press. Worked under the guidance of the prolific newspaper draughtsman Hanslip Fletcher. He showed at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, portraying civic dignitaries and show business personalities. Lectured in architectural development. Guildford Borough collection holds his works. Wrote and illustrated 'A Picture of Surrey' and 'A Picture of Hampshire'. Lived Woking, Surrey and Broad Chalke, Wilts.

Produced artwork for LNER Post-War series.
